OUR REGION _
The Latrobe Valley
The City of Latrobe is a local government area in the Gippsland region in eastern Victoria, Australia, located in the eastern part of the state. It covers an area of 1,426 square kilometres and in June 2018 had a population of 77,168. It is primarily urban with the vast majority of its population living within the four major urban areas of Moe, Morwell, Traralgon, and Churchill.
The City has traditionally been recognised as the centre of Victoria’s electricity industry, which is derived from one of the largest brown coal reserves in the world.
In 2014, the Hazelwood Mine Fire devastated the Latrobe Valley. Burning for 45 days over February and March 2014, it hit communities hard and left residents physically and emotionally exhausted.
The subsequent two Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiries highlighted the needs of community, the challenges it faces and the strength it possesses to thrive.
